“Awake, awake to love and work!” The opening line of this album captures a key aim of singing and the arts—to wake us out of our sleepy routines, to open us wide emotionally and mentally to God’s astonishing activity in and through his creation, to summon us to respond in our loving and our working. 

Our lives are a bewildering mix of beauty and brokenness. The beauty we experience is at times overwhelming, as is the brokenness we see in the world, each other, and ourselves. All our lives we know that our own inevitable demise will come in that final breaking apart of body and soul in death. Death haunts our human existence. We watch others die, their bodies given back to the earth, and know that we ourselves will die. We reach out, as in the dark, for a strong hand to guide us through the shadowed valley and for a shepherd’s voice to comfort us.

That voice comes to us, the voice of the Lamb who was slain but who lives again. Resurrection has the final word in this battle between life and death, between beauty and brokenness. The Radiant Dawn has risen from the dark tomb and has poured his light on those who walked in darkness; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. In hope we sing with the church through the ages, “Te Deum, laudamus!”
